Somewhere in the pleasantly rolling green hills of Kentucky there is a tiny rural community known as May’s Lick and that is where Ann Jeremiah lives and works.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she attended the Cleveland Institute of Art and Miami University, then moving to Wisconsin she attended the University of Wisconsin. During this time in her life she developed an interest in pottery. After her marriage, she moved to May’s Lick where her husband is involved in agriculture.
Her work is primarily in low fire white earthenware, wheel thrown or slab. Most of the wheel-thrown work has been burnished or polished to achieve a soft shiny, smooth surface. All of her work is unglazed. Jeremiah explains “I have been working with the limitations of basically classical forms and monochromatic color. The tension, organization, and textural contrasts are the variables I change. The slab pieces are less strict in form, but still relate in form to primitive pottery. All the pots are pit-fired, sometimes several times, to achieve the color and surface variation I want”.
