Born in 1934, Sigmund Abeles began his artistic career in 1954. He was educated at the University of South Carolina, the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, the Brooklyn Museum School, and Columbia University, where he received his MFA in Painting in 1957. Abeles had a productive career, first in painting and then in other art media such as printmaking, drawing, and pastels.
Four years after graduating from Columbia, he began teaching at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which led to numerous other teaching jobs at Wellesley College, Boston University, the University of New Hampshire, the National Academy School, and the Art Students League of New York.
