Willis ‘Bing’ Davis was born in Greer, South Carolina but grew up in Dayton where he still lives today. He attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and the Dayton Art Institute. No one told him that he was poor – his experience as a child came with the abundance of caring and love from his mother (who worked two jobs), two sisters and three brothers. They nurtured his interest in the arts. When Bing was in fifth grade he already knew his career would be in the arts. Although sports paved his way through college – art was his goal. He has taught for more than 30 years in the school systems of Dayton and after retirement he runs classes through his studio – as he said “I stopped teaching students and started teaching people." Bing’s entire family whether his wife, children, brothers or sisters - over time everyone became involved in the arts. Through ceramics, drawing, photography and jewelry design, Bing’s art is a mosaic of black culture, both African and American. No living Ohio artist better embodies the true personification of African America Art than Willis ‘Bing’ Davis.
