Robert Higgs was a native of Anderson, Missouri, born August 14th, 1916. He has painted in oils and watercolors since boyhood; he studied art in Kansas City and later at the Chicago academy of Fine Arts. He was one of the founding members of the Ozark Artists Guild, now the Spiva Art Center in Joplin Missouri. Higgs tends to work in transparent watercolors. Robert Higgs’ piece “New Orleans” is a great representation of use of transparent watercolors as opposed to opaque. In using these he allows the colors in the piece to coexist and flow into one another instead of each color separating itself from the others. This piece shows how different watercolors can be from oil paintings.
