Marcus is known for her landscapes and portraits. Her large figurative paintings have a dreamlike quality and mesh images from different levels of the conscious and subconscious mind. Her work is often called mythic and mythological. She invokes a combination of mythology and modern life, classical and contemporary themes are blended together. Though she has painted landscapes, inspired by the Hudson River or the dunes of Provincetown, and portraits of her friends and other artists, self-portraits are the mainstay of her work. At times she appears on the canvas as artist, at times as participant in the scene, at times as merely present in the same pictorial space. In her work, forms are flat and simplified; colors are muted with the surface understated.
