Mary Ellen McDermott was born in Akron, Ohio and studied at the Cleveland School of Art graduating in 1940. Though she was trained and proficient in several media, her direction after 1953 focused on enamels as her most chosen medium. Commissions were done for many Cleveland area religious institutions. She taught at both the Akron Art Institute and the Cleveland Institute of Art, becoming the chairman of the Enamel on Metal Department in 1968. McDermott’s 1954 piece "Apostles" won the purchase award at the Butler Institute of American Art. During the height of her career, her work was exhibited at such prestigious institutions as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, and Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows.
