Jack Moulthrop, of Lyndhurst, Ohio was a self-taught ceramist, but he comes from an artistic family. Jack’s brother Ed and his son Philip create wonderfully colored turned wood bowls. In the 1980s, Moulthrop started with pottery as a hobby. Through study and practice, without any formal education in the pottery field except studying books and periodicals, he began to work. He turned a portion of his home and garage into a studio hideaway. He filled the studio with homemade pottery equipment, including a wheel, slab roller and various tools and stamps. Moulthrop preference was working in the slab – paddling method. “Centuries ago our Native Americans without the wheel developed their aesthetic, well rounded form. I have always been fond of it, and that is why I seek it in my work. I have found that slab – paddling works best for me. The desired form is attainable, is less heavy and does not require excessive strength. I start paddling on a large cylinder with a hand hole at the top made from clay slabs about ¼ inches thick. First, I make two half shells then I put the two halves together with blending and smoothing.”
