Rick Olson was born in 1950 in Mayville, North Dakota and studied at Moorhead State University in Minnesota. He has worked as a professional artist since 1973, concentrating primarily on portraits, although his preferred avenue of expression has been the landscape. His meticulously detailed landscapes possess the quality of photorealism, but are easily discernable as his own specific style by their warmth and softness of line. A close inspection of Olson’s pastels reveals thousands of individual strokes and other glazing that visually blend together to form the final image. The influence of Impressionism is apparent, and Olson makes considerable use of the pastel version of the split-brush technique common to Impressionist artists in the form of hatch lines in creating his drawings. He prefers to strive for soft, smooth and elegant blending of color that are sometimes reminiscent of hand-tinted photographs.
