The son of Philadelphia Quaker parents and the student of the Philadelphia College of Art, Joseph Pennell was best known for his illustrations, etchings and lithographs. Pennell was also a lecturer, critic, author and teacher. He is amongst the best known of all American etchers. Through his own massive output and his forceful writing, Pennell became the leading advocate of original etching in American during the early part of the twentieth century. He spent much of his life in London, where he became closely associated with Whistler, adopting much of that great master’s later etching style. Pennell and his wife became Whistler’s foremost publicists and between them they produced Whistler’s biography. An outstanding draughtsman who worked with remarkable speed, Pennell produced some of the finest etchings of the period and after about 1910 also turned his prodigious skills to the medium of lithography. Pennell died in New York in 1926 after illustrating various books and contributing to leading magazines of his day.
