William Schock is an American visual artist who was born in Brazil in 1913. His family moved to Cleveland, Ohio while Schock was in his preschool years. After graduation from high school Schock became a window display artist. He worked in Cleveland and on the West Coast for eleven years. During this period he participated in the Cleveland May Show. Then came World War II and for a while time stopped. But as soon as the post-war period began, Schock followed through on a decision to drop display work and concentrate on painting. He studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts with Karl Zerge, Ben Shahn and David Aaronson. Shahn was a primary influence for Shock’s style which draws some of its flavor from an excellent control of color, close in value and a certain almost ephemeral nostalgia. His wife was Hazel Janicki. Schock taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art and at the School of Art, Kent State University.
