Elizabeth Taylor was a cultural icon, and Liz is one of the most recognizable and iconic artworks in American history. In the early 1960s, Andy Warhol, working from a portrait of a publicity still for one of Elizabeth Taylor's movies, created a series of about 40 Pop art pieces he dubbed "Liz." Because American society was worshiping movie stars, Warhol viewed Taylor as a figure that society was consuming, something to be mass produced and sold. From a young age, Warhol was fascinated with fame, celebrity, and Hollywood, and "Liz" reflects this. It wasn’t until later in life that Warhol met Taylor and they became good friends, corresponding right up until his death.
