Masterfield’s work suggests a freedom of spirit, momentarily captured in paint. She has always laid aside conventional methods for experimentation and exploration. Her work is made with a combination of poured ink and textured materials. Masterfield finds her inspiration in nature - her studio is filled with collections of found rocks, geodes, fossils, and skeletons that she studies to find abstract images. She describes herself as an abstract naturalist painter: “The abstract naturalist artist knows that no one scene can capture the essential reality because nature is always in a state of flux…in the end; it is the mind, not the eye, that controls our vision.”
