In 1980, Bartlett embarked on a collaboration with master printers of the Simca group in Japan. The monumental result was At Sea, Japan, an 8-foot long composition comprised of 96 screenprints and 86 color woodcuts printed on six sheets of Japanese paper hung horizontally, side by side. Bartlett worked in Japan with Japanese Ukiyo-e (woodblock printing) craftsmen to make the twelve elliptical shapes that run across all six sheets; screenprinting was then used for the rest of the image (about 90 screens in all). The print is related to a large painting of the same title.
