Initially Fairchield pursued mining engineering as a career, which led him to work long hours in the desert. He developed a strong desire to be an artist and to capture the openness and beauty of the desert, especially Arizona, where he ultimately ended up living. From a card attached to the painting: “A statement about the American desert as seen by a skilled artist – vast, quiet, arid, and thrilling.”
